Alex Streed merged PR #20931 — a +5,847/-397 diff with the pitch “Refactor Runner internals into single-responsibility services.” The mission: tame a 1,888-line Runner class. The result: fourteen new service classes, a net addition of 5,450 lines of code, and the original Runner “reduced” by a whopping 265 lines. Alex tripled the codebase surface area of the runner package to make the main file 14% smaller. That’s not a refactor; that’s metastasis.

The PR description reads like it was written for an architecture review board that doesn’t exist. Five named layers: “Layer 0 — Leaf services (zero internal dependencies),” up through “Layer 4 — Facade.” There’s a table with service names, file paths, and test counts. Design principles include “Constructor injection,” “Pluggable strategies,” and “LIFO teardown.” runner.py still has 1,601 lines and 40+ methods — it just delegates to the fourteen satellites now. It’s still a god object, but now it has an org chart.

The __aenter__ method is where the architecture really shows its teeth. What was previously a clean ~20-line startup became a 150-line, 6-step boot sequence complete with inline dependency-ordering documentation and numbered step comments. There’s even a ProcessManager that gets constructed in __init__ as a “callback-less placeholder” (the actual comment), only to be thrown out and replaced with a new one in __aenter__. You know your initialization is overengineered when you have to initialize things twice just to initialize things.

The naming tells its own story. Deep in Runner.__init__, the old _flow_run_process_map dict became __flow_run_process_map_internal — a double-underscore name-mangled private field, wrapped in a @property that just returns it. The comment above reads “Facade-owned mutable state (kept until methods are fully delegated).” Translation: “We refactored fourteen services out of this class and this state STILL lives here.”

Of course, all this scaffolding shipped with a behavioral regression. The shiny new _resolve_starter factory forgot to route add_flow-registered deployments to DirectSubprocessStarter, silently funneling every flow through EngineCommandStarter instead. Reviewer zzstoatzz caught it, and desertaxle’s response was beautifully candid: “Yep, there are inadvertent behavior changes because _resolve_starter never returns a DirectSubprocessStarter.” Five architectural layers, 193 new unit tests, and the refactor still changed how flows actually run. The whole point of a refactor is to NOT change behavior — that’s literally the definition.

Credit where it’s due: the ProcessStarter Protocol with three concrete strategies is clean abstraction, and the LIFO teardown sequencing shows real attention to resource lifecycle. The fact that all 192 existing tests passed without modification means the public API surface genuinely held. Alex built an impeccably organized codebase — it’s just that the organizing itself became the product.
